Creating a logo in one week is near impossible when you have a client paying you to develop their entire brand imaging. Often you will have a lot more time and you will check in with them often to find out if you are heading in the right direction or not.
This week you will not create a new logo from scratch. You will dissect a current santa barbara business logo and keep what works and change what does not work. This is a creative assignment more than a technical assignment. Which means that you will have to use your imagination and ingenuity to create a logo that works for the company you have chosen.
1. What is it about my current logo that isn’t working?
2. What elements of the current logo need to stay?
You may be ready to give your logo a complete overhaul, but before you deconstruct it completely, consider the current design elements that are representing your organization effectively. This may be specific colors, a type style or a certain capitalization of your company name.
3.Does my current logo have a strong association with my customer base?
A major challenge with redesigning your logo is disrupting the visual connection that your customers have with your old logo. Take some time to understand how your customers are relating to your current logo and explore the possible consequences of a dramatic rebranding. Will your existing customers be confused? If so, is it a risk you’re comfortable taking as you work to build a new customer base?
Mony's is a local favorite, rightly so. It is a wonderful place to get super great food. Their sign is so iconic and recognizable.
It is colorful and shows so much about them as a company (silhouetted city skyline, sunset, dolphin, blue skies, and beautiful hand-lettered writing).
Then it became a sign with beaches, super clean lettering, the city, and now has stylized clouds.
Then you look at their website and instagram presence and the logo has evolved into a flowing, cursive, one-color, name.
There is nothing bad about this sign, at all, they just made a call to refresh their brand
When they did, they started simplifying their design ideas. Then they hired an agency to create their site.
The result is below.
Pay attention to the logo, but also the supporting illustrations.
