Before you start you need to find inspiration. Collect 5-10 reference photos of a plant that you would like to draw. For example I collected Money Trees. I love the leaf pattern and the braided trunk. So that is what I started with. You will not copy any one image but collect images to source leaves, pots, trunks, and branches. Then you will combine these into a sketch for your composition.
Think of this assignment as more than just drawing a plant. It is creating a resource for future illustrations, patterns, stickers, etc.
Leaves are difficult to understand because from every angle they are different. You will study the leaf pattern of your plant, the way the leaves connect to the trunk, and the way the trunk moves. You will look at colors, textures, and lines.
The general areas can be drawn and then, using a limited (6 color or less) color palette, you will begin to fill in your piece. Drawing your outlines in the color you intend to fill the leaves, branches, etc with makes for a smoother drawing.
Make sure you are using a brush that is not transparent.
You can complete the illustration with textures or shadows or both.
Please DO NOT add a backround, unless it can be removed as we can save this as a transparent file.
